Origin: Gakenke District, Rwanda Variety: red bourbon Process: washed Producers: 274 producers contributed to this offering. (There are 459 Dukunde Kawa Cooperative members)
Mbilima is a washing station owned by the Dukunde Kawa Cooperative. The station sits 2020 metres above sea level, making it one of the highest washing stations in Rwanda.
274 producers contributed to this organic lot of coffee. These co-op members farm on small plots of land in Rwanda’s rugged, mountainous Northern Province. This part of the world has mineral-rich soil and a lush environment that is well-suited to specialty coffee production.
Once the producers pick their ripe coffee cherries and deliver them to Mbilima, the washing station staff take over, carefully hand sorting the coffee before processing it using the washed method and attentively drying it on raised beds for two weeks.
Mbilima has recently become 100% organic, Rainforest Alliance certified, UTZ certified and Fair Trade certified. “It’s been a lot of work to get the certifications,” washing station manager John Bosco Habimana says, “but it also made us realise how many positive things we were already doing. The certifications reinforce this.”
