Origin: Huehuetenango, Guatemala Variety: bourbon and caturra Process: washed Producer: Alfonso Anzueto
Finca Calahute is located in Guatemala’s stunning Huehuetenango region, near the border of Mexico. Coffee in this area can be grown at incredibly high altitudes – up to 2000 metres – thanks to dry, hot winds that blow into the mountains from Mexico’s Tehuantepec plain, protecting the region from frost. These elevations, combined with a relatively predictable climate, create the conditions for the production of exceptional, complex and very sweet coffees.
The farm has been in the Anzueto family since the 1950s, and it is now run by third-generation producer Alfonso Anzueto. Historically, not many micro-lots have been produced at the farm but, since taking over, Alfonso has invested more resources into lot separation, experimentation, processing and quality control. His dream is to become a leader of quality in the region. With the beautiful coffees he's already producing, we think he's well on his way to achieving that!
